Amazing videos in worldview lately. There's this one guy that makes more sense than anyone I have ever heard speak before. I don't think I could ever get tired of listening to him. He's funny and he has that utilitarian brashness about him that makes him likable- he's not one of those Christians that discusses theology just for fun and lives in a fishbowl. But while he has really strong opinions about things like "the good old days" (were they really any better? Each generation has it's own struggles, stop whining and lets face ours!), he always voices them respectfully and logically without shoving them down your throat. It's really awesome.
One thing he said yesterday, however, really struck me. He put up a picture of Brittany Spears. And he asked the audience, "Who is Brittany Spears?" The answer, as he put it, is "What year is it?"
He used tons of examples to show how our world had melded image and identity into the same thing. Stars are constantly changing their images. Now America is buying into the idea that you can put out whatever image you want and it will give you a new identity. And I've totally been doing that myself. It's almost impossible to separate it in our minds, I think- we ask ourselves "who am I?" and the answers are so bound up in our image. How do we even define an identity if it's not image? It's definitely something to think about.
If I wish to change this image, I must first change myself.
Totally unrelated, I've found the most inspiring book ever. I wanted to share this quote, then I'll tell you what book it is, cuz it's the last one you'd expect.
"You'd be surprised. Every bit of life, every single one of us has a dark side… When you decided to leave home… you were venturing out of your particular ivory tower. I know. I was reared in an ivory tower too. Then we get our first good look at the way life really is, and a lot of us want to run back to shelter in a hurry. At age sixteen I had, shall we say, a difficult experience, so difficult that after that I didn't ever again want to see any dirt-or blood-or disease-or cruelty-or whoring-or death. Ever since God has been gently, steadily prying the little girl's hand off the little girl's eyes. As if He were saying, "I can't use ivory-tower followers. They're plaster of Paris, they crumble and fall apart in life's press. So you've got to see life the way it really is before you can do anything about evil. You cannot vanquish it. I can. But in My world the battle against evil has to be a joint endeavor. You and Me. I, God, in you, can have the victory every time.'"

Okay see this is why you're my favorite sister Em J! You can put up a serious post and use quotes from "Finding Nemo" to emphasizes your points! You rock! I have to agree with you too. Since I made that big change 9 monthes ago I have been slowly changing my image (Clothes, hair, glasses). I do this and did this because the old look kind of represents the old me and I don't want to remember the old me. I want to put it as far behind me as possible. It's silly I know but it's kind of a cleansing thing for me. Very wise words though. I love ya sis!

i think that is an easy trap to fall into, certainly for me.
image is everything, and people value the image they spend every waking moment of their lives trying to maintain. with everyone trying to fulfill their "image" to find the new them, people build up prejudices and shun the people they think have too much of a different image than them.
it's the story of western culture, for what, the last two hundred years or so?
or maybe i'm just confusing myself now. hm.
Twice in fourty eight hours? That doesn't suprise me one bit. Only twice? lol
I guess I miss communicated my thoughts. I'm getting good at that, arn't I Wart? lol. I was thinking more of the image we project as far as what kind of people we want to be. It seems like especialy in High School, people work so hard to project a certain identity. Do I want to be Emily the Drama Queen, Emily the Athlete (for the sake of argument...), Emily the philosopher, Emily the girl with short blonde hair, or Emily the carring friend? It just seems like your identity is so much deeper than that... that's just your image.
now you've confused me too, lol.
emily the philosophic athletic drama queen with short blonde hair--she's a caring friend.
rotfl.
so i guess another way of saying it is: who you appear to be or who you try to appear to be may not be who you really are?
it's an issue of being yourself versus trying to put on faces.
boy i was being confusing, wasn't i, haha.
no yeah, definitely makes sense, my bad, my bad.
no yeah? more confusing!!!
I think I get it though. that's good stuff. but one thing I've noticed is how people will change the clothes they wear or something and then expect their character to automatically change with it, that they'll be more accepted by the "cool" people, and are surprised when it doesn't happen. because it won't change automatically, but it might change over time as their mindset changes to fit their clothes.
And verya takes the day, again. EXACTLY what I was trying to say, thank you.
nah, not confusing, just complex. :-)
Oh Oh! I knew the quote! I just didn't remember what it was from. Isn't Christy such a good book? Have you read Julie? I don't think it is as good, but I do enjoy it.
That's funny you should mention Julie, I thought I grabbed Julie when I started reading Christy and didn't realize until a couple pages in! But yeah, i started Julie and someday intend to finish it.
Oh gee, I know that feeling...
You didn't notice till a couple pages in!!!
