wikipedia character descriptions for POTC, Curse of the Black Pearl:
Will: A blacksmith's apprentice working in Port Royal, he is in love with Elizabeth Swann.
Elizabeth: The daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann. She is in love with Will Turner.
Commodore Norrington: An officer in the Royal Navy who is in love with Elizabeth.
Captain Barbossa: The captain of the Black Pearl. He has a love of green apples.
If nobody else can love you, the apples will.
Quite seriously, if you have ANYTHING more valuable to do with your time and/or do not consider yourself to be an obsessed POTC freak, do not read past this point. I just ramble. I don't even care if I don't get any comments, I just want to ramble into thin air and trust that Verya will answer all my questions. :-)
I love the third POTC. No, I didn't see it again, this is just a delayed reaction. I was too tired that night to appriciate it, all I saw was lots of people getting blown up and Elizabeth kissing like ten different guys, and I haven't stopped to think about it again since. But in retrospect, it's an amazing movie. My favorite part is when Jack votes for Elizabeth to be Pirate King. It's a pretty clever stratagy.
To be honest, I didn't really get ANY of the Pirates movies until today. I just bought the soundtrack to the Curse of the Black Pearl, though, and I'm suddenly very, very interested. I think I get most of it now. But I'm still confused on a few things.
In The Curse of the Black Pearl, why does Jack come to Port Royal in the very very first place? And why does he rescue Elizabeth when she falls of the balcony? Just because he's a good man?
Boy, Elizabeth sure is girly and stupid in giving "Turner" as her last name. "My last name is..." *big, romantic sigh* "Turner." You wish. Any other name, and there wouldn't have even BEEN a story.
Why does the Pearl pursue and sink the Inspector after they've already proven Elizabeth's blood won't lift the curse?
Why does Jack take one of the coins from the chest at the end, and how does this render him immortal?
The best part about figuring all this out is realizing that Jack really is a good guy. Because I'm half in love with him myself, and you wouldn't want to be in love with the villan.Elizabeth kind of looks like Jo. With half her brain. Oh, gosh, Will is such an idiot- the best word to describe him is pathetic. He's always wearing a pathetic expression. It makes me want to cry to think that two such idots as Elizabeth and Will have been cursed with a love for one another, and that, futhermore, they may actually end up MARRIED one day. There has to be laws against such unions somewhere.
But I still love them. I think they're great characters, you almost love them for being idiots. You can't not love Will (yes, I said it) and Elizabeth has enough spirit to redeem her stupidity.
I'm very mad with whoever wrote the script for comming up with the idea of a compas that points to what your heart most desires before I could. I could so write the coolest story just around that, but the idea is taken.
Okay, and in the Dead Man's Chest. Why does Jack owe Davy Jones 100 years of service? I don't get that, either.
What does Norrington want with Davy Jones' heart? Isn't he dead yet? (just kidding) You're right Verya, Norrington is a great character, I see now why you like him. I rather like him myself.
Oh, Will, my poor, stupid friend, why do you not YELL IN ELIZABETH'S FACE for kissing your friend Jack? Can you not see that this is a potential problem? Just maybe?
*hums* Why do I feel like Anna right now?

Ooo, I'm almost tempted to not answer any questions just because you called Will an idiot. But you have redeemed yourself, lol. JK. Anyway, Anna could answer them probably just as well...
In The Curse of the Black Pearl, why does Jack come to Port Royal in the first place?
Well, since he's in a tiny little long-boat he probably got into a scrape somewhere, and like he said, needed a ship to get out of it. Port Royal was probably the closest port. For him, Will and Elizabeth being there was just coincidence.
Why does he rescue Elizabeth when she falls of the balcony? Just because he's a good man?
Hmmm...I think so. Anna? He called on the Navy dudes and they couldn't swim, so maybe a little because he was a good man and a little bravado. Also, Elizabeth is a very pretty woman, and Jack's a rascally pirate.
Boy, Elizabeth sure is girly and stupid in giving "Turner" as her last name. "My last name is..." *big, romantic sigh* "Turner." You wish. Any other name, and there wouldn't have even BEEN a story.
Well, she was afraid of saying her name was Swann. Remember when the maid is like, "They've come to kidnap you because you're the governor's daughter." She didn't want any harm to come to herself (which she figured would happen if they knew she was the governor's daughter). And yes, part of the "Turner" thing is totally a romantic silly girl dreaming. kinda like me sometimes...
Why does the Pearl pursue and sink the Interceptor after they've already proven Elizabeth's blood won't lift the curse?
umm...hold on. i'm trying to get everything straight. somebody please correct me if I get this mixed up. OK, so let's see what's going on. Barbossa has Jack on the Pearl, and Jack wants to negotiate the return of the medallion. Barbossa says that people are easier to search when they're dead - that's why they pretty much blow everything up. They just wanted to kill everyone and then find the medallion.
Why does Jack take one of the coins from the chest at the end, and how does this render him immortal?
Any mortal who removes a piece of gold from the chest becomes immortal. Jack didn't really want to die, so he took a coin to become immortal. this way, Barbossa couldn't kill him. Of course, he couldn't kill Barbossa either until Will could get all the coins together and some blood...but they managed to do that.
Okay, and in the Dead Man's Chest. Why does Jack owe Davy Jones 100 years of service?
Jack agreed to 100 years of service, and in return, Davy Jones raised the Black Pearl (which had been sunk some time in the past).
What does Norrington want with
Davy Jones' heart? Isn't he dead yet? (just kidding)
Lol Norrington wants to stop being a pirate and start being a privateer again. ;P
Oh I knew he was good the whole time, I just knew it!!! I <3 Norrington!!!
Oh, Will, my poor, stupid friend, why do you not YELL IN ELIZABETH'S FACE for kissing your friend Jack? Can you not see that this is a potential problem? Just maybe?
Ah yes, that's what true love must do to you...
I'm SSSSSSOOOOOOO happy that you decided you actually love it!!!!!! I can't tell you how happy I am!!!! I was very very very sad when you said you hated it, but now it's ok because you like it. I thought the ending was AMAZING, with the battle and all that.
I don't know if you've read Wikipedia's stuff on PotC 3 or not, but there's on part that says on the deleted scenes, one of them showed that if Calypso had met Davy Jones after the first ten years, he would have been freed from his duty to ferry the souls. It then states that since Elizabeth remained faithful to Will after ten years, he is free and can live with her and Will Jr. Jr. (yes, William Turner, William Turner, he must be William Turner the third, right?) ;) I think that's even better.
the only character I really couldn't stand was Governor Swann. Why did they have to keep such and expendable character for three whole movies?!?!?!?! Argh!!!! ok, so he's not that bad. just a really big idiot through pretty much all three. and beyond very expendable. I hate it when you can tell characters are expendable.
Confession: I almost cried when Norrington died. I <3 Norrington.
I'm so happy you liked it!!! and anyone else, correct me if I got it all screwed up please :)
oh yes, on the blowing up the interceptor question -
I just thought ("I'm having a thought." ~Verya's other half)
ok, I was just thinking, they knew Elizabeth's blood wouldn't work, but they didn't know that Will's blood was the blood they needed. (Remember, after they blow up the interceptor, Will comes back and Barbossa's like "who are you?") So they thought it was fine to kill everyone and just find the medallion. Kill everyone except Jack of course, because he was the only one who could tell him whose blood was needed. and after Will tells them himself who he is, Jack is useless so they maroon him.
I think that's it.
yes, i realized that she had to give a fake name, but THAT fake name of all fake names... *shakes head*
okay, the peice of information I was missing with the blowing up the interceptor question was that Elizabeth still had a madalion. I'd forgotten she takes one with her when Will rescues her. Thanks for clearing that up.
eeehablah, define "faithful." no, lol, i did read that- and that's the key to me suddenly liking the movie. i thought Will and Elizabeth were permanantly seperated, cuz i had to leave before the end-of-credits scene.
ah, I get it. okay. thanks very much, i think you answered all my questions perfectly. You're the best, Verya.
wait, one thing. i still don't see how davy jone's heart will help Norrington become a privateer again. He's only a pirate now cuz he's down on his luck, right?
Ok, pirate and privateer are two different things. Pirates are like Jack, Barbossa, etc. privateers are former pirates who are pardoned by the king, and basically they work for him.
In Dead Man's Chest, Becket tries to get Jack's compass in return for full pardon and commission as a privateer. That's what the letters of Marque are all about - basically they save Jack (or anyone who has them) from the noose.
Norrington wants to get something that he can trade Becket for his full pardon. That's why he wants the heart: so he has something to trade in return for the letters of Marque. So at the end of PotC 2, he shows up in Becket's office with the letters of Marque (with his name conveniently filled in), and trades the heart for them so he can be a Commodore again.
unfortunately that kinda backfires...poor Norrington...
yeah I was kinda bummed before the end clip...'cause I thought Will was immortal and Elizabeth wasn't forever, and they would be seperated and Elizabeth would die, but the ending combined with the deleted scene was really awesome, wan't it?!
rotfl i was like, that was totally an anna post and then you stole my thu..HEY.
it IS an Anna post. haha. random squeeing over random things.
I think Verya answered all the questions adequately.
oh, and for why does Jack rescue Elizabeth? Jack's currently been caught trying to steal a ship. a lady falls in the water right in front of him, he might as well do a little rescuing to redeem himself.
ah that's it! i knew there was a good reason! not that it really would've helped if he wasn't Captain Jack Sparrow, because one good deed didn't redeem him...it's condemned him, lol.
ah yes, i see. yes, i knew the difference between privateer and pirate, i just didn't get how the heart would help norrington become one.
i get it now, though, thanks.
what are you doing here Verya? I thought you were camping!
haha, I know why the post sounds so much like me. Capitalization for emphasis and random ranting.
what, I just beat Verya in POTC rationalization? *gaspshock*
Oh come on, I think Jack was being good for once too . . . Wow, good job answering all the questions Verya!!
And I am so glad that you like the movies now Emily!
I saw that thing on Wikipedia Verya, and that made me and Michaela much happier.
Becket: Your father seems to believe that honesty is the curency of the realm, however, curency is in fact the curency of the realm.
ha-ha I was at my dad's office WAITING to go camping!
yes anna, let's face it now, you will always be smarter than me. but I'm cool with that, ;) I got first comment!
