Okay, first- there's a huge difference between the three little pigs and Eragon, and it's an important distinction. The difference is this: In TLP, the wolf is supposed to be bad. Even when you're three years old, you KNOW that he's bad, and you shake your head at his behavior. The writers of TLP intended for him to be a bad example to learn from. He's a villin. I think it's the same way with Narnia- the White Witch uses magic, evil magic, but it's OK because she's supposed to be evil. Does that make since?
In Ergon, however, it's the GOOD guys that are doing questionable things. (using magic) So it's CONDONING bad behavior. The quesion is this- is magic bad behavior? Is it compleatly imaginative? If so, than there CAN be such thing as 'good magic.' It was just made up for the sake of imagination.
However, in Harry Potter (I asked my dad) the characters use REAL powers that evil people in the real world DO use. Like witch craft. The writer makes it seem inocent, but the things they are doing are strictly forbidden by the Bible, and CANNOT be used for good. It's wrong to try to make them good. It would be like making a murderer a good guy. (or a Pirate, or a theif... which is why I also struggle with POTC and Oceans 11)
SO... I think it comes down to this: Is there a difference between the Witch Craft in Harry Potter and the Magic in Eragon?
Feel free to disagree with me.

The witchcraft in Harry Potter, is, well, just that, witchcraft.
but the magic in Eragon can't be used in the real world.
yknow, duh, no matter how much I say Brisingr, nothing's going to happen.
*dissappears in puff of flame*
JK!
i wil stop being funny now.
actually, that's not likely.
nevah mind.
I haven't seen Oceans 11.
but I have read a book called 'The Thief.' and that portrays thievery with such magnetism...It draws you right into it. It's not just petty stealing, but thievery on a grand scale...and you can get into the whole thief thing without realizing what happened.
That is also what can happen with magic books...you can get sucked in without quite realizing what happened.
When and if you condone bad behavior...that's when you start to fall.
I'm rambling on and on....I forgot what the point was. *tries to get back on track*
That's one of the main reasons why it's dangerous, Eowyn. Those spells and things in Harry Potter? They make them seem inocent and unreal. But they ARE real. That's what alot of people don't realize. There are people out there who do those things. It may seem creepy, and it is, but alot of what goes on in Harry Potter goes on in real life. It's sinful. (and I'm not judging you at all for reading Harry Potter- I think it's actualy a good idea. Then you can form a good opinion. You don't become what you read, you learn from it)
I know. It's creepy.
I totally do think we should read Harry Potter......how can you tell people it's not good if you don't know for yourself?
IT'S NOT CONDONING EVIL!!!! It's realalistically potraying the darkness of the human heart and giving real, applicable lessons from real, applicable people. Gosh, self. Just wait a yearish and you're whole entier worldview will change.
