I'm really far in Eldest. It's sooooo good. But it's raised some questions in my mind... they go so much into explaining magic, how it works, and how Eragon uses it. And in the real world, there IS magic... it's just bad. Always. It's witchcraft. So how can we excuse the use of it in stories, especialy when it's used for good? I know it brings into question everything we hold dear... but I'm really confused about it, and I'd like to know what you guyes think.
Okay, here's a weird story. A pop up led me to a Lord of the Rings poster being sold on E-bay for five dollars. I didn't really take time to study it, but I carelessly emailed the link downstairs, just to see what mom would say. Well she bought it. Just like that. Without heasitating or asking me if I really wanted it or anything... she just clicked 'buy.' It was weird... but cool! It's a map of Middle Earth with a border of pictures from the movie. I think I'm going to hang it behind my computer, because the moniter will cover some of the map and a picture of the fellowship siloweted against the sky, but nothing else. (I hope)
Look at the words to this song. It's so cool...
Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night toss and turn and dream of what I need
[Chorus]
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet...
And the music is a swelling orchestra. Really, you guys would like it. (and I wouldn't say that lightly, you Enya lovers) And just think what a cool LOTR music video it would make! :-D

ahhh. I want an LOTR poster. but, of course, I'm not allowed to put one up............
*sigh* I'm not very qualified to answer that question. nor do I have a real way of explaining myself..............I'll think about it.
I thought very long and hard.
2+ minutes.
but okay, I'll try to explain myself.
yknow how there are demons? and how they're bad? I think because Jesus gives no sign of other "magical" things, (like he cast out demons), demons could cause witchcraft. (only a theory here). you could almost call Jesus's and the disciples' miracles "magic" (not to be sacrilegous) and I think that goes along with angels and the good side of "magic."
but I also believe that magic is a word humans have made up to explain things they can't explain by themselves.
which is why it's in apostrphes.
and I also think Eowyn is right. We live in a world without God, yknow, and there are going to be great books written by non-christians.
if the law was we could only read books by christians, I'm sure all the rhetoric students would be happy. no more Plato's republic. no more epic of gilgamesh. w00t!
but see, it IS true. magic does exist. i'll just tell you what my mom has always told me: things like that either come from God or from Satan. If it's not from God then it is evil.
Obviously, God works through miricles and "magic", but we have changed the meaning of the word. i would say that with the world's current definition of "magic" that all magic is evil. magic is, like Legolas said, something people use to explain away anything they can't understand. and so i'd say that's wrong, or at least ignorant.
from what i've heard, i don't think i want to read the books. now, don't get me wrong, i LOVE those type of books. if i didn't believe as i do then there is no way i wouldn't have finished them by now, both of them, despite school.
i also know mom wouldn't let me read them. i think this was the same for most of you, harry potter was out of the question. we didn't even need to ask.
i think people get into trouble either by believe magic and trying to preform it or by believe that it doesn't exist because that's wrong, it does exist and we have to be careful.
as a learning experience, sure eowyn, i know what you mean. what about the 3 little pigs? what the wolf did was wrong, he ruined their houses... does that mean we shouldn't read 3 little pigs? no, we can learn from it... but just make sure you're learning the right thing. talk to your parents maybe, see what they have to say. if you're afraid they'll stop you from reading it once they find out what it is, then maybe you should consider stopping! but definatly i'd see what they have to say about magic and this topic.
this is just what i think, what i have been taught, but it makes sense to me. but hey, i'm open to other oppinions and such... and there's nothing that says i have to be right.
magic does exist, and, as i would define magic, it is all evil because magic doesn't come from God.
about your song ribbons, i have heard it and it is a cool song.
i do want to let you know though, it's not quite an enya fan song. see, it's got a great beat, and good words, so you love it... but that sort of beat doesn't really seem to attract enya fans... we long for a different type of beat... more like in the one in the River Sings... :D
I like songs that have a beat. they usually make me hyper.
books and stuff were written for us to learn from them. if you look far back, that's the origin of books. Homer wrote his Iliad as a example for the young men to follow.
I think parents should recognize that you are mature enough to learn the right things from what your reading. My dad trusts me enough, but my mom is hyperactive about me reading anything wrong. think of it this way: would your parents want you reading a book that proved evolution right? would they believe you were mature enough to know it's wrong, or would they be upset?
ehehey, that's very off-topic.
sorry!
true, but it's not evolution we're dealing with.
honestly, as far as "what's cool" i'd say evolution is less cool than being created by God.
magic on the other hand... is obviously more "fun" than no magic... therefore it's more of a threat because it's likeable. magic is cool, we all love wizards like gandalf, don't we? so basically it could be more dangerous than reading, say, about evolution... which could and should actually help you belive more in creation. reading a book where they do magic just reinforces magic, i suppose it could show you how it could be dangerous, but most books aren't set up with that learning process in mind. ususally the "good guy" uses magic to defeat the bad guy. magic in our world, if not by God, is evil... therefore unless God is working through us, any magic we would/could preform would be evil.
*Sigh* I was actually just using it as an example, Aragorn.....I never said it was a perfect example.
because Harry Potter makes the bad guys the good guys..........actually, I might be able to read it, the question is whether I want to. and the answer to that is no.
you ignore the lyrics now Anna, but you'll care latter. oh yes.
